Privacy Policy

GPT Exporter is a local-first Chrome extension for backing up your own ChatGPT conversations. This policy explains what the extension can access and what it sends off your device.

The short version

• Your conversations never leave your device. We have no server that stores or receives them.
• We do not collect analytics, build user profiles, or run ads.
• We never sell or share your data with anyone.
• The only personal data we ever receive is your email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to Pro.

What stays on your device

Everything the extension captures is stored locally in your browser and on your own file system:

• Conversation content that you choose to save, including message text, code blocks, tables, attachments, and generated images. This is kept in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB).
• Exported files (Markdown, text, PDF, and other formats), saved through Chrome's download system to a folder you pick.
• Local settings such as your export count, language preference, and auto-export folder choice.

None of the above is transmitted to us or to any third party.

What is sent off your device

Only one thing, and only if you subscribe to Pro:

• Your email address is sent to our licensing endpoint to check whether an active subscription exists for it. The response is a simple yes or no. We do not use it for newsletters or marketing.

Payments are handled entirely by Stripe. Your card details go directly to Stripe and we never receive them. Our licensing endpoint is hosted on Vercel.

Why the extension needs its permissions

• Access to chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com: to read the conversation you are currently viewing so it can be saved.
• OpenAI file and image domains: to download the attachments and generated images that belong to your conversations, so exports are complete.
• Downloads: to write export files to your computer.
• Storage: to keep your saved conversations and settings locally.
• Tabs, active tab, and scripting: to detect which ChatGPT conversation is open and render the extension's interface on the page.
• Alarms: to run scheduled auto-exports in the background.
• Our licensing domain: to verify a Pro subscription, as described above.

The extension does not read pages on any other website.

Your data, your control

• Delete individual saved conversations at any time from inside the extension.
• Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data from your browser. Files you already exported remain on your computer.
• To have your email address removed from our subscription records, email us and we will delete it, subject to the billing records Stripe is legally required to retain.

Children

GPT Exporter is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date at the top. Material changes affecting how your data is handled will also be noted in the extension's release notes.
